Antic Banquet

Friday 12th of September 2008 - 12pm
Near Norwich

ArtOtherwise whispers on where the magic is hiding : ) Low profile deep magic as always. Are you missing the summer already? We are.

We heard about this festival from people we know, thought we would share it with you:
-----------

It's September and we're not yet done with Summer antics. We’ve got our dancing shoes on and we love bouncy music! We like the ludicrously odd. We like the mystical and the wonderful, and we like to keep them real. We like costume, words & rhythm. We like to be lyrical and connected. We are new tribes and we like good vibes, we like hellos don’t like the good-byes. We are the Antic Establishment, and we like to PLAY!

More than a festival to be drawn to for great music, live acts and beautiful surroundings, the Antic Banquet is also a fluid, communally creative space where festival-goers embrace the rowdy and the funny and any activity is an antic activity. Workshops, games, good food and communal chillage come together with the best live and performance acts over a weekend to end the summer with all the joy that it deserves.

JAKE AND DINOS CHAPMAN

My Giant Colouring Book

16th August – 14th September 2008

Big names with statements sometimes too irreverent for mainstream museum gigs over at little gallery Campbell Works - this is an exciting opportunity for anyone into the Chapman's work to get an intimate perspective on these celebrities.

WARNING, may cause "moral panic" and possibly un-suitable for those with exaggerated moral certitude! Here is what Campbell Works has to say:
------------

Even today, when everything in art is supposedly permitted, the work of Jake and Dinos Chapman still has the whiff of scandal and transgression. Their obsession with the ‘dark’, chaotic imagery of the unconscious, where unreason rules, is re-enforced by a consummate mastery of traditional skills in whatever medium they deploy.

The Chapman Brothers’ work has subverted the tradition of transcriptions, a respectful and integral art historical process, by defacing many works by great masters in order to create new territory. 19 of the 21 images are based loosely on join-the-dots drawings from children’s picture books. These have triggered surrealistic interventions, improvised monstrous creatures, fantastic landscapes and macabre incidents, deviating wildly from the prescribed dot-to-dot formation. Dinos has said that they ‘are about how wrong you could make an image. How you could use nodal points and ignore them at the same time’.

’My Giant Colouring Book’ is a touring exhibition developed by the Hayward Gallery and the Arts Council England.

Dr Jyotsna Srikanth

When: Fri 23 May~ 7.30pm (doors 7pm)
Where: St Ethelburga's

Carnatic music from versatile violinist and composer Jyotsna Srikanth, famed for her blend of bhava (emotion) and brilliant technique. Plus band - Passing this one on from our friends at World Music UK folks.

Dr Jyotsna Srikanth and her musicians gave an outstanding performance at WOMAD in 2007 and we have invited her to perform in the beautiful settings of St Ethelburga's next Friday.

While she has been experimenting recently with fusion and beats, next Friday's concert will see her and her musicians give a traditional concert of the Carnatic music she specialises in. Hope you can join us for what should be another special night at St. Ethelburga's.

About the Artist
Dr.Jyotsna Srikanth started learning Carnatic music from her mother Smt.Rathna Srikantiah from the age of five. She then learnt violin under the R.R Keshavamurthy, the living legend of seven stringed violin. She gave her first performance at the age of nine. She is an all rounder who has given numerous solo concerts, jugalbandhi concerts, jazz - fusion concerts apart from accompanying most of the stalwarts in Carnatic Music Dr. Balamuralikrishna, Sudha Raghunathan, Nityashree etc. Her violin playing has a nice blend of 'bhava' [musical expression and emotion] and technique. She has been featured in all major festivals in India and abroad (Europe, USA, Canada, Singapore, Dubai). She has received many awards and titles, notable among them are Ananya Yuva Puraskar Award-2003, Best Violinist Award from Music Academy, Madras, "VADYA VICHAKSHANA" title from Swami Chinmayanandaji.

All the best

Gypsy Folk Feat

Katherine Toy on accordion and Helmut Scholz on violin

Saturday 31st May 2008
Time: 5:45 - 7:15 p.m.
National Theatre foyer, London

I met German violinist Helmut Scholz in St. Paul's Underground Station. I was on my way to work on a Sunday, which was naughty of me, but became so captivated by the solo performance of this long thin rocking bow like figure who's cloths and long hoary beard blew out in the wind chasing through the tunnel like a vagabond, that I left the station only to return with change, breakfast and a coffee!

Helmut's performance is engaging, something like a conversation, even more like a story. He is the Ancient Mariner of the fiddle. When he performed for us last, the faces of all present were the faces of children gathered around a story teller. He captured and held their full attention, sometimes waning somber, sometimes dropping phrases provoking spontanious laughter as he crept among them with his fiddle. He is not just a musician, but also a performer. This perhaps explains his recently discovered passion for the stage, and combining his music with acting. After decades of busking in countries across Europe, busking around the South Bank in London, Helmut has recently found himself picked up for a number of exciting stage roles. He is still to be found however, as he always was, entertaining on the south bank of the river and in underground stations across London.

For anybody not lucky enough to have chanced yet upon Helmut in his natural environment under bridge or tree, the 31st offers a wonderful opportunity to see Helmut in action, and performing with his long standing partner in music, Hungarian accordion player Katherine Toy.

I look forward to seeing you there! I would also encourage anybody interested in casting Helmut to come along or to get in touch.

Andrew Walter at The Macbeth Gallery

April 14th - April 27
The Macbeth Gallery, 70, Hoxton Street, London N1 6LP

Andrew Walter is an illustrator and bad tempered sod currently being kicked out of South London. He graduated from Kingston University in the summer of 2007 with a BA in Illustration and is now chipping away at establishing his freelance career. Drawing takes priority in his work, but he yearns for the day he can tackle some printmaking again. He has exhibited at a number of Lazy Gramophone events in the past, as well as at the group exhibition. A Word In Your Eye, in conjunction with Write To Ignite festival.

The grey hair on the right side of his head is a birthmark, not an indicator of worry. Trephine Me contains all new work, and is his first solo show in London.
