Shane Bradford HISTORY 2

November 2 – 18 2007

Opening November 1st 6-9pm at Campbellworks
Artists selected short films evening and informal talk – November 17th 2007, 7pm

Best known for his ‘dipping’ process in which various objects are repeatedly dipped in multi coloured emulsions, Shane Bradford’s practice broadens to encompass large-scale oil painting, 3 dimensional objects and project work.

HISTORY2 (‘History Squared’) marks a development in the work away from the self-referential aspects of the dipping process. As the technique has evolved it is no longer necessary for the subject to refer to the process itself. Instead certain phenomena associated with the ‘dipping’ action; namely covering, sealing, burial, time, preservation, renewal, and layering are used to generate subject matter and objects which are consequently consistent with their own fabrication. Such a symbiosis between content and process, each driven by the other forms the trajectory for the exhibition and drives an enquiry into the artist’s personal history. Firstly pitting his work in relation to that of his artist parents, the theme expands to confront the modern role of the contemporary painter in relation to the long and weighty history of painting.

Consistent with previous bodies of work such as the ‘Sign Series Paintings’ in which the narrative qualities of one particular colour sequence is employed throughout, each work in HISTORY2 shares the hallmark of the colour-set red, black, and white. This acts as a kind of coded branding system, which assists painterly decisions about colour, and helps to further delineate and define the intention of each piece.

Talk to the SCARF, Cause the FACE ain't listning

Sofia Niazi
2006
SOAS Art Society
Limited Edition, Paperback

The Muslim head scarf and its place in our societies: a hot topic contended by states and religious communities alike, but a debate invariably dominated by men on both sides. Here is an amusing and comic insight into a young British Muslims relationship to her scarf. This little gem from a girl who's hijab, I have it on good authority, has long doubled as a ninja disguise!

A mistake often made, seems to be a monolithic concept of the "scarf issue" which fails to acknowledge or capture diversity of opinion and belief and more often than not to be for or against the scarf without serious reference to women's own relationships and beliefs. Here Sophia Niazi raises her voice on the subject as naturally and unpretentiously as a child -  another take, just one voice, her voice, and that is what I love about it.

Describing the conception of her work, Sofia says:

" 'Talk to the scarf’ is short a illustrated account and exploration of the headscarf from the point of view of the young Muslim girls that you don’t hear about on tv or see in the papers. It looks s at the scarf as a functional and interesting feature of Muslim dress. It is a collection of ideas that focus on the imagination of individuals and potential of simple materials. I made the book around the same time that a lot of controversy was emerging about the niqab and hijab (head scarf) and I thought that it had been portrayed as a very serious thing by people who were not Muslim when in reality it’s a mundane piece of cloth that you’ve decided you will put on your head so people can’t see your hair. I made the book to give to my sisters and friends, who inspired me. It’s a pretty simple book in a scrap book style, it was fun to make and girls who are around 15 seem to like it a lot."

わたしがあなたを選びました - "I Chose You"

鮫島浩二/Yukari Ueno (植野ゆかり)

This book was illustrated by a friend, a talented illustrator and a fine mother. It has been published in Japan, see links. Translation and article, possibly even English version of book to follow. The poem/story is very touching, and yet I am reluctant to post it without Yukari-san's enchanting illustrations.

Watch this space.

States of Conciousness, Fantasy and Form - Yure

by Imbekinit2

"The key to the magical door is the energy of the human in its various states of consciousness....Many people believe that imagination is just fantasy. To the creative individual, however, imagination is vapour that can carry thought forms to supernatural levels through the subconscious." Says the author on the back page of her collection.

One summer on the Normandy coast, a young boy struggles to overcome the boredom of a summer holiday spent alone.
