Laye’s spiritual music is an extraordinary fusion between Senegalese tradition, the rhythms of West Africa and the beats of the world. He is a Fula, from Podor in the Futa Toro region of North Senegal, brought up on the African tradition of storytelling through song.

Admissiont is £10 and can be paid on the door.

Dr Jyotsna Srikanth

Carnatic music from versatile violinist and composer Jyotsna Srikanth, famed for her blend of bhava (emotion) and brilliant technique. Plus band - Passing this one on from our friends at World Music UK folks.

Dr Jyotsna Srikanth and her musicians gave an outstanding performance at WOMAD in 2007 and we have invited her to perform in the beautiful settings of St Ethelburga's next Friday.

While she has been experimenting recently with fusion and beats, next Friday's concert will see her and her musicians give a traditional concert of the Carnatic music she specialises in. Hope you can join us for what should be another special night at St. Ethelburga's.

About the Artist
Dr.Jyotsna Srikanth started learning Carnatic music from her mother Smt.Rathna Srikantiah from the age of five. She then learnt violin under the R.R Keshavamurthy, the living legend of seven stringed violin. She gave her first performance at the age of nine. She is an all rounder who has given numerous solo concerts, jugalbandhi concerts, jazz - fusion concerts apart from accompanying most of the stalwarts in Carnatic Music Dr. Balamuralikrishna, Sudha Raghunathan, Nityashree etc. Her violin playing has a nice blend of 'bhava' [musical expression and emotion] and technique. She has been featured in all major festivals in India and abroad (Europe, USA, Canada, Singapore, Dubai). She has received many awards and titles, notable among them are Ananya Yuva Puraskar Award-2003, Best Violinist Award from Music Academy, Madras, "VADYA VICHAKSHANA" title from Swami Chinmayanandaji.

Gypsy Folk Feat

Katherine Toy on accordion and Helmut Scholz on violin

I met German violinist Helmut Scholz in St. Paul's Underground Station. I was on my way to work on a Sunday, which was naughty of me, but became so captivated by the solo performance of this long thin rocking bow like figure who's cloths and long hoary beard blew out in the wind chasing through the tunnel like a vagabond, that I left the station only to return with change, breakfast and a coffee!

Helmut's performance is engaging, something like a conversation, even more like a story. He is the Ancient Mariner of the fiddle. When he performed for us last, the faces of all present were the faces of children gathered around a story teller. He captured and held their full attention, sometimes waning somber, sometimes dropping phrases provoking spontanious laughter as he crept among them with his fiddle. He is not just a musician, but also a performer. This perhaps explains his recently discovered passion for the stage, and combining his music with acting. After decades of busking in countries across Europe, busking around the South Bank in London, Helmut has recently found himself picked up for a number of exciting stage roles. He is still to be found however, as he always was, entertaining on the south bank of the river and in underground stations across London.

For anybody not lucky enough to have chanced yet upon Helmut in his natural environment under bridge or tree, the 31st offers a wonderful opportunity to see Helmut in action, and performing with his long standing partner in music, Hungarian accordion player Katherine Toy.

Andrew Walter at The Macbeth Gallery

Andrew Walter is an illustrator and bad tempered sod currently being kicked out of South London. He graduated from Kingston University in the summer of 2007 with a BA in Illustration and is now chipping away at establishing his freelance career. Drawing takes priority in his work, but he yearns for the day he can tackle some printmaking again. He has exhibited at a number of Lazy Gramophone events in the past, as well as at the group exhibition. A Word In Your Eye, in conjunction with Write To Ignite festival.

The grey hair on the right side of his head is a birthmark, not an indicator of worry. Trephine Me contains all new work, and is his first solo show in London.

A solo exhibition of Eva Yip's work, "Lifting the Mask on Beijing Opera" is a colourful, lively and often entertaining depiction of a host of well-known and beloved characters from the Beijing Opera. The open evening on the 17th will allow participants the opportunity to gain an insight into the opera's highly coded language of symbolism, Eva Yip our guide in an exotic theatrical landscape.

Best known for his ‘dipping’ process in which various objects are repeatedly dipped in multi coloured emulsions, Shane Bradford’s practice broadens to encompass large-scale oil painting, 3 dimensional objects and project work.

HISTORY2 (‘History Squared’) marks a development in the work away from the self-referential aspects of the dipping process. As the technique has evolved it is no longer necessary for the subject to refer to the process itself. Instead certain phenomena associated with the ‘dipping’ action; namely covering, sealing, burial, time, preservation, renewal, and layering are used to generate subject matter and objects which are consequently consistent with their own fabrication. Such a symbiosis between content and process, each driven by the other forms the trajectory for the exhibition and drives an enquiry into the artist’s personal history. Firstly pitting his work in relation to that of his artist parents, the theme expands to confront the modern role of the contemporary painter in relation to the long and weighty history of painting.

Consistent with previous bodies of work such as the ‘Sign Series Paintings’ in which the narrative qualities of one particular colour sequence is employed throughout, each work in HISTORY2 shares the hallmark of the colour-set red, black, and white. This acts as a kind of coded branding system, which assists painterly decisions about colour, and helps to further delineate and define the intention of each piece.
